BigAir Group extends cybersecurity play with CyberHound acquisition

BigAir Group has acquired managed services security solutions provider, CyberHound, in a $7 million deal, extending its cybersecurity play in the process.

Effective July 1, BigAir said the acquisition is “consistent” with its plan to improve its offering to the mid-market, with CyberHound providing offerings to the education industry, alongside 550 business customers.

BigAir CEO, Jason Ashton, said the acquisition will bring new technology into the business as well as an established customer base.

“This acquisition not only gives us a significant edge in our existing business and education markets – it significantly expands BigAir’s addressable market,” he said. For the full article click here

Only 29% of organisations have a cyber-security expert in their IT dept

Just over a quarter of organisations have an in-house cyber-security expert and half have no IT security experts of any kind.

Spiceworks polled more than 600 IT professionals in the UK and US to see if they’re adequately countering the rapidly growing levels of cyber-attacks. It was found that 29 percent of organisations have a cyber-security expert working in the IT department, and only seven percent have an expert in another department or on the executive team.

Almost a quarter (23 percent) of organisations pay outside security experts to help protect their environments and fill the knowledge gap. A concerning 55 percent of organisations don’t have regular access to any IT security experts at all, internal or third-party.

Cyber-security is a priority for 73 percent of CIOs and senior IT leaders, followed by 56 percent of CTOs and 54 percent of CEOs. Less than 50 percent said cyber-security is a priority for their CFO, COO or CMO. Yet most organisations (80 percent) experienced at least one security incident last year. For the full article click here

It’s Time To Think Of Cybersecurity As A Business Enabler

Last year, CIO, CSO and PricewaterhouseCoopers released a new Global State of Information Security survey, which polled more than 10,000 executives from 127 countries about IT security. The results were a mixed bag, with security incidents up 38% over 2014 but corresponding budgets rising only 24%.

The survey reflected broad thinking about how companies are trying to defend themselves from hackers as well as employees, the most often cited sources of security compromises. But despite the continued growth in hacks and other security incidents, there were some important signs that security threats aren’t being taken seriously enough at the executive level. For one, the poll found that only 45% of boards participate in overall security strategy.

Brakes for your bullet train

This finding reflects common corporate psychology that cybersecurity is a cost center and a drain on resources – a Cisco survey of over 1,000 executives also found that 74% of respondents in the U.S. said that the main purpose of cybersecurity is to reduce risk instead of enable growth. I’ve found that people tend to think of cybersecurity as costly, complex, inefficient, and a damper on productivity. Many people believe it may not actually work or mitigate risk. This can result in security measures being implemented piecemeal without any overarching policy, resulting in costly but poor integration. For the full article click here

Cyber-security is a problem, extra training the solution

The ever-increasing threat of cyber-attacks against businesses is leaving many vulnerable, as they are simply not reacting fast enough, according to new research.

Spiceworks has surveyed IT pros if their companies are prepared for a cyber-attack, and the results show, as Spiceworks puts it, ’cause for concern’.

Less than a third (29 per cent) of IT pros polled said they had a cyber-security expert on board. Seven per cent have an expert, albeit in another department. In order to fill the gaps, 23 per cent said they hire outisde experts for help.

More than half (55 per cent) don’t have regular access to IT security experts at all, and more than two thirds (67 per cent) have zero security certifications. For the full article click here

The National Association of Attorneys General will convene the new membership of its cybersecurity and privacy committee today, reassessing enforcement priorities on data breaches and other cybercrimes that could potentially set the policy agenda across states nationwide. 2 Up-And-Coming Cyber-Security Opportunities

Earlier this year, I predicted that cyber-security would vault from a “hot” to “red-hot” technology trend.

And the more research I do on this topic (I’ve spent more than 18 months doing so, in fact), the more convinced I become that the situation is escalating.

In turn, the profit opportunities for investors are even more substantial.

In short, without adequate cyber security, our world is doomed.

Think about it: We’re zooming towards a completely digital and internet-connected world.

Already, nearly 90% of business assets are digital. And with the billions-upon-billions of dollars pouring into the Internet of Things, everything is eventually going to be connected to the internet – and therefore, vulnerable to attack. For the full article click here
