Reports have revealed that almost 400 gigabytes of company information was fished out. This included client files, source code and internal emails, which the hackers posted online. What came as a surprise was the company’s alleged links with repressive regimes, countries that have been at the receiving end for their despotic temper.
The company, famous for developing the surveillance software Remote Control System, also known as RCS or daVinci, landed in the soup, after leaked documents proved its links with Sudan, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Bahrain, Oman, Morocco, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. A majority of these countries have been condemned for human rights abuse and excessive surveillance and policing of their citizens, journalists as well as political
Hacking Team’s association with the FBI was already known. However, what was shocking was the revelation that it also supplied the Drug Enforcement Administration with spyware tools, which were capable of intercepting phone calls, texts and social media messages. In a way, there was complete invasion of privacy, to the extent that even the user passwords were hacked.
However, Hacking team denied involvement in any kind of wrongdoing. One of the employees of the company, Christian Pozzi, tweeted that the company was working closely with law enforcement to investigate the breach.
