With recent high-profile hacks of major retailers and tech companies, the need for safer software and security online is growing rapidly.
Cal Poly San Luis Obispo is expanding its cybersecurity program to train students to fight hackers and protect your digital accounts.
Computer science student Dylan Howell says he’s looking forward to an exciting career in the growing field.
“This stuff is freaky but it’s all for good causes if you’re on the right side of it,” Howell said.
The so-called “San Bernardino iPhone” scandal made people think twice about setting passcodes on their phones. Thousands of Target customers had debit and credit card information hacked after a major data breach. Sony employees fell victim to hackers after their email accounts were attacked and most recently, the security of Netflix accounts is in question.
“The whole race to security is insane,” Howell said. “I love seeing it everywhere in the news.”
Dr. Ignatios Vakalis is chair of the Cal Poly Computer Science Department.
“The events on the news almost daily fuels the interests of the students,” Dr. Vakalis said.
Three years ago, the university was granted funding to get the computer science department up to speed on all things cybersecurity. For the full article click here
