Physicians, Heal Thy Own Security Weaknesses

Healthcare organizations need to pay particular attention to closing vulnerabilities.

Last year was filled with many high-profile security breaches leaving millions of health records exposed and costing exorbitant amounts in time, money, and reputation. Healthcare is uniquely positioned as a target for such attacks because of the protected financial and personal health data it manages. According to research firm Gartner, at least 40 million healthcare records have been breached to date, and the healthcare industry lags behind when it comes to bolstering cybersecurity.

The Anthem healthcare breach in early 2015 was the shot heard around the world when it comes to data breaches, affecting the personal information of millions of employees and members. It was among the largest breaches ever for an insurance company and even effected Blue Cross and Blue Shield plans not even owned by Anthem.
