Naval War College Professor Appointed to State Cybersecurity Panel

The governor appointed Derek Reveron, a professor of national security affairs and EMC Informationist Chair at the school, to the new panel.

A professor from U.S. Naval War College in Newport has beenn amed to a newly formed panel that is part of a statewide effort to improve cybersecurity.

Derek Reveron, a professor of national security affairs and EMC Informationist Chair at the school, was named to Rhode Island’s first Cybersecurity Commission by Gov. Gina Raimondo who signed an executive order establishing the group.

The commission is tasked with assessing the state’s cybersecurity infrastructure and activities within all executive branch agencies. They will also recommend ways to enhance the resiliency of government operations, according to the governor’s office. The commission will also focus on supporting economic growth of the cybersecurity sector and workforce in the state.

Reveron believes that cyber threats threaten economic growth.

“State government is primarily responsible for law and order, economic prosperity, and education,” Reveron said. “Given how easily cyber threats impact individuals, I am proud to be working with leaders throughout the state to ensure Rhode Islanders are prepared for the information age in which we live.”

The commission will submit reports that will be important in shaping statewide policy, according to the governor.

“We must be innovative and develop a clear strategy to prepare the public and private sectors for the technological challenges of the 21st century,” Raimondo said. “Technology is a constant in our daily lives, from our health and safety to our economy. In addition to putting the appropriate cyber safeguards in place, we will also find creative ways to grow this sector of our economy and bring new jobs and opportunity to Rhode Island. I am grateful to the members for offering their time and expertise to this important challenge.”

The establishment of the commission is a positive step in recognizing the importance of technology in everyone’s life, according to Lewis Duncan, NWC provost.

“The Naval War College has always been proactive on matters of national security, and cyber is no different,” he said. “We are delighted to be part of this effort.”

Reveron says that while some security is on the federal level, some is also on the state level.

“Cyber challenges the national security divide where the federal government is responsible for international challenges and state and local governments are responsible for domestic ones,” Reveron said . “As a Rhode Islander, I am honored to serve in a personal capacity on this state-wide commission.”

Other members of the commission will include the directors of the Emergency Management Agency, the Rhode Island National Guard, the Department of Public Safety, the Department of Business Regulation, the Office of Digital Excellence, and the Executive Office of Commerce.

The commission will also include one representative each from a quasi-public agency and a municipal entity. The governor’s executive order will leverage expertise in academia and the private sector by including at least three representatives from research institutions in Rhode Island and representatives from each of the following private sector industries in Rhode Island: defense, financial services, information technology, and energy.

NWC is a one-year resident program that graduates about 600 students and about 1,000 distance learning students a year carrying out four missions: educate and develop leaders, help define the future of the Navy, support combat readiness, and strengthen maritime partnerships. Students earn Joint Professional Military Education (JPME) credit and either a diploma or a master’s degree in National Security and Strategic Studies. Established in 1884, U.S. Naval War College is the oldest institution of its kind in the world. More than 50,000 students have graduated since its first class of nine students in 1885 and about 300 of today’s active duty admirals, generals and senior executive service leaders are alumni.
