County Affairs Committee stops in Lubbock for input ahead of 2017 session

The County Affairs Committee in the Texas House of Representatives has a list of charges members are looking into ahead of the 85th Legislative Session, including jail standards, cybersecurity, Child Protective Services and rural hospitals.

The committee is hosting hearings across the state, and a few of its members, including Chairman Garnet Coleman, D-Houston, and Rep. Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, were in Lubbock for the first public hearing to get comments from local experts on the issues.

“This is a listening tool — lets get all the information, talk to a lot of people and figure out what it is we need to focus on next session,” Burrows said. “Anytime I get the people I represent the opportunity to have a voice at the state level and on public record it’s a great opportunity. We’re a different part of the state, and because of where we are population wise — some of the distances between hospitals and cities — we have a different set of factors.”

The committee oversees the Texas Commission on Jail Standards, and one thing chairman Coleman said they’re looking into is the issue with suicides and self-inflicted injuries. The committee heard from a few county sheriffs including Lubbock Sheriff Kelly Rowe, who’s recommendation was possibly more resources for the Texas Commission on Jail Standards to provide more training for law enforcement officials to notice and handle the warnings or “red flags.” For the full article click here
