Parliament to discuss lift breakdowns, cyber security on Jul 11

SINGAPORE: Parliament sits on Monday (Jul 11) with lift breakdowns, cyber security and the minimum voting age on the agenda.

Members of Parliament (MPs) have submitted 86 questions for oral answer and 50 questions for written answer.

Eight MPs will raise questions on the recent increase in reports of lift breakdowns in Singapore. There have been multiple cases since the start of the year, including the death of an elderly man in May. New safety regulations for lifts and escalatorswill also kick in on Jul 25, the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) said on Jul 8.

Mr Alex Yam will ask the Ministry of National Development on the progress on the independent audit checks of passenger lifts by the BCA, while Mr Liang Eng Hwa will ask if the recent spate of malfunctions could have been prevented. Mr Pritam Singh will also ask if there will be additional cost to town councils as a result of the new regulations. For the full article click here
