600 Million Samsung Phones At Risk Of Hacking: Cybersecurity Group

WEST PALM BEACH (CBS12) — Your photos. Your texts. Your emails. The classified information of more than 600-million smartphones could be vulnerable to hackers as a result of a newly revealed keyboard glitch.
A cybersecurity firm claims it found the flaw in every model of Samsung Galaxy smartphone, and what we learned it allows hackers to do is downright scary.
The hackers could eavesdrop on your calls, tamper with apps, copy messages and photos and even gain access to the phone’s camera without  your knowledge, according to researchers at “Nowsecure”.
Web expert Craig Agranoff told CBS12 that if you think hacking is only for foreign countries like China or terrorist groups.. think again.
Agranoff said, “They can insert a virus into your keyboard through the predictive typing and therefore they can get core access to your device and basically hack into anything.”
“You never know where a hacker can be. I mean it can literally be in the room with you, but it can be a 13-year old kid who just happens to be smart with a computer or a computer security expert who was fired from his job who decides he wants to go into the dark world.”
Samsung says it will patch the issue through its Samsung Knox device and that updates will be rolling out in a few days, but that it’s unclear whether all devices will receive the fix.
Chad Jenkins is a former FBI agent and current security consultant.
He told CBS12 that the exploit serves as a warning for the owners of every mobile device–not only Samsung Galaxy users.
He said that with the rise of apps that control everything from your security system to your appliances, and with the rise of insecure WIFI, everyone is at risk.
“Everyone has to be aware of this threat. Unfortunately, we don’t have that great of a litmus test to see just how susceptible we are. 1:19:27)
Samsung said in a statement that it “takes emerging security threats very seriously” and was aware of the issue.
The experts we spoke with both said that Samsung Galaxy uses should avoid using insecure Wi-Fi until the Samsung patch is released.
