New cybersecurity director has three years to show results

The clock is ticking for Will Garrett, the city’s new cybersecurity director. He will have about three years to show results and justify his position before the public funding all goes away.
The city and the county have each appropriated $50,000 to support the new position during the coming year with the private sector, including the San Antonio Economic Development Foundation, expected to provide a matching amount.

The good news is that three years is more time than was initially thought when the position of a full-time director of cybersecurity at the San Antonio Chamber of Commerce was first discussed.

At first, it was not clear that the city and county were willing to commit funds beyond the current fiscal year. But David Marquez, executive director for Bexar County Economic Development, told the Chamber’s Cybersecurity Committee, which is overseeing the new program, that it is his understanding that the county will support the position for the first three years of its operation, but probably not beyond that.

“Three years is about right,” Marquez said.

The committee’s chairman, John Dickson, a principal at locally-based cybersecurity firm Denim Group, said he is taking nothing for granted and expects they will have to make their case before local officals each year to secure any additional public funding for the position.
