A teenage member of black hat hacker group Lizard Squad has pleaded guilty to numerous charges brought against him in his native Canada, all centred on illegal computer activities. The group notoriously launched DDoS attacks on both PlayStation Network andXbox Live last Christmas, bringing both gaming services down for the holidays.
Many of the defendant’s alleged crimes stemmed from abusing players of online games such as League of Legends. The boy was reportedly able to uncover his targets’ personal information and make real-world threats to them. His offences include swatting (falsely triggering a SWAT team to surround his targets’ homes) harassment, extortion, and public mischief.
Canadian local news site Tri City News reportsthat the teen has plead guilty to 23 charges, from a total of 40. Although he cannot be named, Ars Technicatracked down a nearly nine-hour long video that the man, who used the online personae “obnoxious” and “internetjesusob”, had posted to YouTube as he carried out his cyber attacks apparently in real time.
Crown prosecutor Michael Bauer outlined to Port Coquitlam provincial court how the teen had spent his online hours threatening predominantly young, female gamers and their parents, including those located in both Canada and the US. In one case, his abuse towards one League of Legends player after she rejected him was so prolific that it caused the Arizona-based student to withdraw from university for a term. His attacks on the woman included two swattings, distributing her parents’ credit card information, and bombarding her phone with hundreds of simultaneous text messages.
The teen has been remanded in custody for a total of 171 days, and has been ordered he undergo a psychiatric assessment — his second. He has appeared remorseless, smiling during the hearing according to local media. No official statement from either the accused or his legal counsel has been released. His sentencing is set to continue on 29 June, where his other crimes will be considered.Previously, an 18-year old British man wasarrested in January in connection with the Lizard Squad DDoS attacks on PSN and Xbox Live. The especially malicious hacking group was — at least at one time — purportedly only seven members strong, and with the Canadian case ongoing, that’s two fewer causing harm.
