NY lawmakers look at cybersecurity laws, penalties

— State lawmakers in New York are set to examine current laws relating to privacy violations and data breaches and whether current penalties fit the crime.

The Senate Select Committee on Science, Technology, Incubation, and Entrepreneurship plans to hold a hearing on the topic Wednesday at the Legislative Office Building in Albany.

Discussion is expected to focus on legislative proposals to protect privacy as well as to prevent thieves from obtaining an individual’s personal data.

Protecting consumers’ data has become an increasing priority for lawmakers as more and more information is stored and transmitted online.

The committee is chaired by Sen. Martin Golden.
