Nation lacks cybersecurity

North America requires a regional, coordinated and integrated strategy to guarantee cybersecurity, which it currently lacks, the North America undersecretary for the Foreign Relations Secretariat (SRE), Sergio Alcocer said Thursday.

During the inauguration of the conference “Mexico: A Vision of Climate Change, Cybersecurity and Energy in North America,” the public official said the cybersecurity infrastructure in the area isn’t well protected.

A large attack in the cybersphere sector would have catastrophic consequences, he said. For example, a cyberattack could severely damage the regional economy, the undersecretary explained at the conference hosted in the Foreign Relations Secretariat headquarters.

“We need to think about new models so that we can defend our shared values together,” Alcocer said.

North American governments must work together in a more integrated way. Being regionally integrated translated to more competitiveness in the world, he said.

Mexico, the United States and Canada represent 30 percent of the world’s total gross domestic product. Their trade and economic integration are undeniable, but their problems are unique, the undersecretary said.

North American leaders have established objectives to make the region the most competitive in the world, he said.
