ALPENA – The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees recently accepted a bid of $64,800 from Merit Network to provide cybersecurity training at the college as part of the $2.5 million Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training grant courses.
“This is from our current TAACCCT grant form the Department of Labor, and one of the board emphasis in the current training grant is cybersecurity, so bids were solicited for the training,” ACC President Olin Joynton said. “There was a point system for how the bids came in from the three companies that did respond.”
The grant was awarded to ACC from the Department of Labor to allow continued training with local industries in four areas; cybersecurity, aerospace, green energy/smart grid technology and advanced manufacturing.
Merit will provide three fundamental cybersecurity courses for the college over the summer months, including courses for certified information security officer, certified penetration engineer and a certified professional ethical hacker. The courses were carefully chosen through a needs assessment distributed to regional IT professionals.
The bid from Merit Network was one of three received, with the other two from New Horizons and EBRC. The Merit bid was selected because it met all the required criteria for the training and included an added value within the bid of $32,000 in certification exams.
