Cameron appoints Baroness Shields as cybersecurity minister

Baroness is former Head of Facebook in Europe and current chair of Tech City UK.

Baroness Joanna Shields has been appointed as the UK’s minister for internet safety and security for the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Shields will be the Conservative led government head for cybercrime, hacking and fight against child pornography.

PM David Cameron is yet to hand Shields a full portfolio on the role.

American-born Shields was appointed to the House of Lords in September 2014. She served Mr Cameron as an adviser for the digital economy.

The PM recruited Shields to chair Tech City UK and become the country’s Ambassador for Digital Industries in July 2014. She is also a non-executive director of the London Stock Exchange sitting on Mayor Boris Johnson’s London Smart Board.

Previously, Shields held the position of VP for Google EMEA (2005 to 2007) and in 2009 was recruited as head of Facebook in Europe until 2012.
