Canadian cybersecurity company eSentire unveils CIT bursary

A Canadian cybersecurity company planning to create some 100 jobs in Cork has announced a bursary with Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) to develop a pool of Irish talent to help drive its rapid expansion.

eSentire made the announcement yesterday at the official opening of its European headquarters and Security Operations Center (SOC) in Cork.

The firm’s security experts continuously monitor their customers’ networks to detect and block cyber attacks in real-time. They protect trillions of dollars in assets and high-value confidential data for their clients all over the world.

The company announced plans last May to establish its European headquarters in Ballincollig, Co Cork — a move supported by the Department of Jobs, Enterprise and Innovation through IDA Ireland — and create up to 100 jobs over the next five years.

And it confirmed yesterday that it will award the new bursary to a second year student starting this college term. It is the first bursary for CIT’s Department of Computing.

eSentire CEO J Paul Haynes said they wanted to express their commitment to Cork and Ireland through the bursary, and support the demand for the crucial skill sets they need to keep pace with growing demand for their services.

“It was important for us to find a location that had an ecosystem, similar to that of the Waterloo region in Cambridge Ontario, where we are based, one that could supply the technical talent we rely on to deliver high-quality service for our clients in the EU,” he said.

“Cork has developed a strong technical and commercial ecosystem to support our business and the Irish government has worked with us every step of the way.”

Michael Loftus, head of the faculty of Engineering and Science at CIT, said the company will be a significant addition to the Cork cluster of major IT security enterprises based here.

eSentire is actively recruiting for its Ontario headquarters and is on track to nearly double its workforce to 250 by the end of the year.
