Cybersecurity: One of Xi Jinping’s Key Agendas for US State Visit

Tibetan Chinese Uighur and American activists rally outside the White House in Washington

Chinese leader Xi Jinping says he is looking forward to his first visit to the U.S.as president and expects it to deepen understanding and friendship between the two countries.

“Xi’s visit aims to enhance friendly cooperation between China and the United States and contribute to global peace and development”.

He will also be meeting with executives at Boeing and Microsoft. He is expected to make the only policy speech of his U.S. visit in Seattle next Tuesday.

The Chinese President leaves for Washington, D.C. the following Thursday, where he will meet with President Obama.

The news comes after the announcement of a technology conference in Seattle organised by Chinese minister Lu Wei, director of the Central Leading Group for Internet Security, which will bring together USA firms including Facebook, Apple, IBM and Uber.

The previous regulations – containing provisions that required Chinese banks to buy more domestic IT equipment and Western tech vendors to disclose secret source code if they sell to lenders – drew strong protests from foreign business lobbies, the USA and European governments. But it was not until the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue in 2013 that discussions entered a substantial phase.

“Seattle benefits from close economic, cultural and educational ties to China”, Mayor Ed Murray said.

The Wall Street Journal today takes a look at President Xi’s return to Tacoma – their thoughts on what the Chinese hope to gain from the visit, and on Tacoma’s relationship with China.

“At the same time, the Chinese government firmly safeguards its own interests in cyberspace and is resolutely opposed to any statements or actions that harm China’s interests”, Zheng told a briefing on Xi’s visit.

China became the world’s largest trading nation in 2013, overtaking the U.S. in what Beijing described as “a landmark milestone” for the country.

A senior Chinese military officer had labelled the United States the world’s biggest cyber-thief previous year .

Last week, US officials said Washington was considering sanctions against Russian and Chinese individuals and companies for cyberattacks against USA commercial targets. China’s woes have already helped send Canada and Brazil into recession, and caused the USA stock market to plunge dramatically at the end of August.
