ormer fugitive and cybersecurity legend John McAfee says he may be running

We know very little about the new party he will create but a campaign logo like the above “John McAfee was here!” would still be better than Jeb Bush’s “Jeb!” logo.

John McAfee, antivirus software pioneer and one-time focus of the most freaky fugitive story in the world, appears to be running for president of these United States. According to The Hill, McAfee will be “founding a new party yet to be announced”.

The paperwork was confirmed as authentic by Kyle Sandler, who is identified as one of the campaign’s directors and responded to a request for comment from a contact form on McAfee’s personal website.

While McAfee may have the expert knowledge needed to address cybersecurity challenges, he has no experience in politics, and there will be many who will question the presidential credentials of a man who was, as recently as last month, arrested for driving while under the influence of Xanax and in possession of a handgun.

“I can not confirm rumors I am running for president. It’s not something I would just choose to do on my own”.

A former NASA computer programmer, McAfee was employed in the early 1980s as a consultant for Booz Allen Hamilton, the same NSA contractor Edward Snowden worked for before leaking his trove of top-secret documents.

Of course, McAfee’s history – in addition to pioneering antivirus technology which he later sold to Intel – includes losing up to $100 million in the 2007 crash, and fleeing Belize after his neighbor was murdered and he was wanted for questioning by authorities. He was described as a person of interest but not a suspect. He said his reaction came out of fear of the authorities there.

A USA Today profile of him from earlier this year noted that McAfee settled in Tennessee after being on the run for most of 2014.
