Last week privacy and security news remained a hot topic in the US with the Department of Justice issuing new cybersecurity guidance for companies to prevent and respond to data breaches, including putting in place a plan to investigate and respond to a breach and retaining a privacy lawyer before the fact. Separately, the Pentagon announced it will be soliciting bids on a cybersecurity project totaling close to half a billion dollars to help shore up the security and privacy of some of its networks. Finally, the FTC announced a proposed settlement with Naomi Technologies, whose technology allows retailers to track consumers’ through their stores, for misleading consumers by not providing an opt-out mechanism in stores that use its services.
From the EU, Google, in a move to counter the EU’s recent antitrust allegations, announced a $150 million commitment to the Digital News Initiative, a partnership of at least seven publishers, with an aim to encourage products that focus on ads, video and apps. Also, the French data protection authority, the CNIL, released its 2014 summary of enforcement actions, showing a significant increase in data protection actions over prior years.
In digital advertising news, FTC Commissioner will be the keynote speaker at the DAA’s Annual Summit on June 2, in New York, an event not to be missed. In other industry news, last quarter’s M&A activity jumped 14%, while Refinery29 recently raised $50 million in funding, valuing the 10 year old company at approximately $300 million.
