PDPC launching guides to help companies combat cyber security breaches

SINGAPORE —  With small and medium-sized companies increasingly coming under threat from cyber security incidents, and not having the resources to mitigate them, the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC) is working with the Cyber Security Agency to launch two guides on how to manage data breaches, and how to secure personal data stored digitally.

This will include a recommendation by the PDPC to report any data breach incident to them.

With many SMEs in a recent survey saying they would benefit from legal advice in the area of the Personal Data Protection Act, the PDPC has tied up with the Law Society to offer an one-hour consultation session at a lower rate of S$500.

This one-time offer, launched on June 1, would include advice on whether the companies have complied sufficiently with the Act, and any follow up actions they need to take.

These are two of some new initiatives that the PDPC unveiled this morning.

Speaking at the Personal Data Protection Seminar, Minister for Communications and Information Dr Yaacob Ibrahim said: ”Personal data protection and cybersecurity are key factors to the success of Singapore’s Smart Nation vision. If we don’t do it right, people will not have the confidence to work with and engage our companies.”

He added that the PDPC will continue to prioritise helping businesses, especially SMEs, protect personal data.
