Public speaks on possible USD 259 cuts, board approves cybersecurity

WICHITA, Kan. — Time is ticking as USD 259 officials try to balance the budget.

Board members are now saying they’ll need to make $22 million dollars worth of cuts instead of the $30 million previously estimated.

But the question remains, where will these cuts come from?

Tonight they looked at energy usage measures — like adjusting the thermostat — to even asking their employees to pay for more of the increases in health insurance costs.

Tonight several people spoke advocating to keep librarians in elementary schools.

Wendy Fjordan was cut from her librarian job a few years ago.

“There’s a stereotype of librarians that they just check in and check out books but librarians do so much more,” Fjordan said. “Sometimes they are the only technology teacher for a building.”

High school student Andrew Figueiredo, who spoke to KAKE News yesterday, took to the podium and spoke on how his elementary librarian impacted him. For the full article click here
