Cybersecurity researchers remotely hack Jeep Cherokee; crash it into a ditch

In a move which underscores a first-of-its-kind car hack, cybersecurity researchers Charlie Miller – a former National Security Agency staffer – and Chris Valasek managed to remotely gain control of a vehicle and crash it into a ditch.

Miller and Valasek seized control of the car — a Jeep Cherokee — from a distance of approximately 15 kilometres from the vehicle. For the breach, the researchers used only a laptop and a cellphone.

The Jeep Cherokee which was hacked by Miller and Valasek was being driven by tech site Wired’s writer Andy Greenberg on public roads in St. Louis. The two security researchers demonstrated the hack for

Sharing details about the hack, Miller and Valasek said that they used a laptop – a MacBook Pro – and cellphone to get access to the on-board information and entertainment systems of the Jeep Cherokee, through the vehicle’s wireless Internet connection.

Against the backdrop of the Jeep Cherokee’s hack, Miller and Valasek claimed that “hundreds of thousands” of cars are at a potential risk of such hacks. In that reference, Valasek said: “Generally speaking, car hacking isn’t mainstream. It’s very difficult and costs lots of money. That could change in the future, which is why we’re working on the problem now.”
