The Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology today formally welcomed Exabeam to the ICIT Fellows Program. Exabeam, a leader in advanced user behavior analytics, adds to the Institute’s growing advanced cybersecurity capabilities practice and will be represented by Fellows Mark Seward (VP Marketing) and Ralph Pisani (EVP, Field Operations).
As preventative cybersecurity technologies attract more attention from lawmakers and agency executives in the aftermath of the OPM breach, Mr. Pisani was among Fellows who joined ICIT in advisory meetings on Capitol Hill, including meetings with Representatives Ratcliff (TX), Langevin (RI) and Senator Alexander (TN) to discuss how the breach occurred and how OPM and other agencies could have used advanced cybersecurity technologies to better protect themselves. Ralph and Mr. Seward both contributed to ICIT’s recently published legislative brief “Handing Over the Keys to the Castle: OPM Demonstrates that Antiquated Security Practices Harm National Security” which will be distributed to select House of Representatives and Senate members as well as federal agencies over the next several days. ICIT has also been asked to provide a briefing of this analysis to the U.S. House of Representatives Homeland Security Committee.
On July 22, 2015, Mr. Seward will be among ICIT Fellows that will participate in a closed door intelligence briefing to select Senate cybersecurity leaders on priority issues including user behavior analytics, preventative vs. reactive cybersecurity technologies and health sector cybersecurity.
The following day, Mr. Seward will join ICIT Sr. Fellow Parham Eftekhari for an interview by Federal News Radio’s Francis Rose. The interview, which will be broadcast as part of a two-part series, will discuss the findings of the Institute’s OPM Brief including an analysis of the breach and recommendations on cybersecurity upgrades as well as discuss the current cybersecurity legislative landscape.
“There is a growing debate in the tech community over the use of preventative vs. reactionary cybersecurity technologies. With the addition of behavioral analytics experts Exabeam to our Fellows Program, ICIT continues to stay at the forefront of the security industry to ensure cutting edge advisory to the Critical Infrastructure community.” said ICIT Co-Founder and Sr. Fellow Parham Eftekhari.
“The data breach headlines aren’t changing. Whether it’s a federal agency or a major corporation, the attacker obtained ‘unauthorized access’’ is always included in the breach details,” said Mark Seward, VP of product marketing at Exabeam. “Attackers with nearly invisible malware enabled by valid credentials can only be observed through automated analysis of credential behaviors. In joining ICIT, our hope is to provide objective advising on how organizations can use machine learning to understand normal credential behaviors to make what’s anomalous stand out and track the path of the attacker through the IT environment.”
About ICIT: The Institute for Critical Infrastructure Technology is a non-partisan think tank providing objective advising to the legislative and federal community on technology and cybersecurity issues. ICIT Fellows provide expertise on technology legislation as well as general thought leadership to Senate and House members, congressional staffers, federal agency leaders and the critical infrastructure community through ICIT briefings and other direct engagements.
