HACKED: Time to buck up cyber security, awareness

New York Stock Exchange
When the news of New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) shut down, halting stock exchange for more than three hours filled my notifications last week, I couldn’t help but to think of the Gotham Stock Exchange heist from the movie, The Dark Knight Rises.

Don’t jump the gun yet, I’m not suggesting any sort of mischief or that sort of misdemeanor by the “super-villain” Bane behind the shutdown.

NYSE president Thomas Farley informed that there was a technical issue and consistent with their regulatory framework, a decision to suspend trading was called upon as measures to resolve the problem was worked out.

The glitch at NYSE wasn’t the only concern that day as United Airlines also faced some technical anomalies grounding its flights for an hour or so.The Wall Street Journal‘s website was down too and all around the same time frame.(Hhmm…something fishy?)

Just before we could present our own analysis or theories on what could have transpired (like a cyber-attack, killer-robots, rise of Ultron, the mechanical intelligence takeover or even an alien attack perhaps as it is only natural for most of us to do so in the wake of such events), the FBI had to rain on our parade.

“We’re not big believers in coincidence either. We’ve been in contact with all three companies to see what’s going on…We do not see any connection to a cyber-breach or a cyber-attack…It does appear that it’s not a cyber-intrusion,” told FBI Director James Comey to the Senate Judiciary Committee, the Washington Post reported.

So it was neither a coordinated cyber-attack/hacking nor a robotic intelligence takeover and the respective organisations—NYSE, WSJ and United Airlines, were back on track running their operations in the next couple of hours.

These cyber-episodes raise concerns about the sheer vulnerability of the technological systems that underpin most of our day to day activities in the virtual, internet and social media empowered sphere.

Closer to home, we witnessed the official social network accounts of the Royal Malaysia Police (RMP) being recovered after it was hacked earlier Monday.

The Inspector-General of Police, Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said, the force’s Facebook page and Twitter account had been hacked at 2.20pm by an unknown party, identified as #AnonGHost.

Also, earlier this year the official website for Malaysia Airlines was hacked two times in a row just over the course of 30 minutes.

Apart from all these, you often hear qualms by friends or mutual friends on Facebook claiming that their accounts have been hacked and to ignore messages directed by their compromised accounts. (creepy…)

In 2014 Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) Incident Statistics revealed that 1125 intrusion and 1302 intrusion attempts were present out of 5948 reported incidents on cyber related activities.

What does all this boil down to?

Definitely, a need for a safer and secure cyberspace activity and engagement without having to be bugged by the thought or fear of not knowing if you’d be the next victim of cyber-predators out there.

Time for me to consult my tech-guru to grace and shower me with whatever knowledge essential on how to stay safe (not only on road, which is crucial during this festive season, it is balik kampung time guys, drive safe) but also on how to stay safe on the net.

As I embark on the pursuit of knowledge under the guidance of my tech-guru, you shall buck up too probably consulting your own cyber-expert sensei (or just visit CyberSecurity Malaysia’s website an agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation)

We need to be prepared and gather all our might in the face of any unprecedented cyber-breach or glitch (most importantly, we need to be ready to face an artificial intelligence take-over, don’t we?)
