‘Hacktivist’ apparently intrudes on 97.3, sends out message

A Terre Haute radio station had its signal hacked for 30 minutes Sunday evening, possibly by a so-called “hacktivist” group called Anonymous.

The hackers used the WXXR 97.3 signal to broadcast a message, which relayed, in part, an alleged plot by the U.S. government to murder millions of Americans and “re-educate” others at FEMA camps.

The hacked broadcast lasted about 30 minutes, and then was returned to the station’s music playlist. “This was not a planned event by The Bird (97.3 FM), its supporters, or affiliates,” according to the station’s Facebook page.

“It appeared to be coming underneath our actual signal,” said Doug Kirkham, station spokesman. “They did not disable our equipment.”

The station is doing its own investigation and has contacted the Federal Communications Commission, he said. Once that internal investigation is completed, it will be turned over to the FCC, which could not immediately be reached for comment late Monday afternoon.

“We can’t trace the origin of the signal,” said Kirkham, who does marketing for the station, which plays modern rock. The station can’t confirm or deny whether the group responsible is “Anonymous.” He noted that Fox News and Paypal have been hacked by Anonymous, and that “they couldn’t find the source.”

Those wanting to listen to the full message can go to the group’s Facebook page at “X97rocks.”

According to Kirkham, some are suggesting the station is responsible for the hacking as a publicity stunt, something he denies. Those employed by the station sometimes work 12-, 16- and even 20-hour days “to bring modern rock back to the Wabash Valley,” he said.

The hacking “was a big shock to us,” Kirkham said. No one was at the studio when the incident occurred.
