In the wake of what is believed to be the largest computer data security breach in U.S. history, the head of the government’s Office of Personnel Management has resigned [“Director quits after breach,” News, July 11]. Unfortunately, the same hackneyed result of pacifying the public with a scapegoat will not cut it this time — not by a gigabyte.
Finding solutions is much more challenging than assigning blame. But that is what we must do, and fast. To dither much longer will result in future breaches of our networks that will make this one seem like the tip of the hackberg.
The shortage of college graduates with bachelor’s degrees in cybersecurity, systems security and network security must be addressed. The federal government should fund 4-year scholarships for every qualified high school student who majors in cybersecurity and maintains a 3.0 grade-point average. I am sure the 21 million victims of the Office of Personnel Management data hack would support that.
