Council adopts cybersecurity rules

The Council has formally adopted new EU-wide rules to step up the security of network and information systems. The network and information security (NIS) Directive lays down security obligations for operators of essential services in critical sectors and for digital service providers. Each EU country will also be required to designate one or more national authorities and to establish a strategy for dealing with cyber threats. The Council position at first reading adopted confirmed the agreement with EP in December 2015, but EP also now needs to approve it. The NIS Directive is expected to enter into force in August.
