Hackers are interested in one thing: making money.
“A lot of money,” said Kelsey Farbotko, an attorney with Williams Mullen who practices health care law and is part of the law firm’s data protection and cybersecurity team.
Cybersecurity has become a necessity for many involved in the health care industry with an increasing number of hacking attempts targeting hospital systems and insurers, experts say.
Last Monday’s cyberattack on Washington, D.C.-based MedStar Health Inc. was only the latest reported instance.
Earlier in March, Kentucky Methodist Hospital in Henderson, Ky., was the victim of a ransomware attack, which involves a hacker locking down a data system until a ransom is paid. Last month, Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center in Los Angeles paid $17,000 to restore access to its electronic records. For the full article click here
