Hospitals review cybersecurity to thwart hackers

A recent cyberattack that crippled a major Washington area health care system has hospitals across the nation looking at digital network security.

“We’ve been really proactive,” Information Technology Director Adam Stahl said from Windber Medical Center.

“We try to lock our system down to the best of our abilities.”

Somerset Hospital has hired consultants to try to hack into its systems to identify risks, Information Technology Director Jonathan Bauer said.

One strategy is maintaining separate networks for different functions. That way, if one computer gets infected it may only affect part of the operation.

“Even our staff doesn’t have full access to other departments,” Stahl said. “We started that eight or nine years ago. We try to stay ahead of the game.”
